Bad News...

So I was not accepted to U of Western Ontario and U of T today. Super shitty. I'm just 2 more rejection letters away from a mid-mid-life crisis!

HACUA Classics Conference

My first classics conference is done. It was a lot of fun, a lot of stress, and involved a lot of alcohol! It was an undergraduate conference with people from (literally) all over North America. There was a guy from U North Carolina Chapel Hill, Wisconsin, Columbia, Cornell, Saskatoon, Calgary, Carleton, Simon Fraser, Berkely, and our keynote speaker was from McMaster!

I presented after lunch on day 2, and I'm glad because then I could gauge if I needed to edit my presentation, what I should wear, etc... I totally needed that. There was a huge range of presentation topics, some of which I knew NOTHING about, but they were still interesting. I was surprised to see that most people just read their essay off - no powerpoint prepared, no handouts, etc...weird. That made some people's presentations a little hard to follow, even if they were still interesting. I'm glad that I prepared a powerpoint presentation based off of my essay.

I talked about the construction of (elite Roman citizen male) sexuality around the time of the late Republic, early Empire. It went really well. My topic was definately the only one directly involving sexuality and so my presentation seemed quite different from other people's, but it's good to be the black sheep of sorts. I got a LOT of questions at the end, though. Most people's presentations didn't breed so many questions, but it was fun to answer them, even the one who was trying to poke a hole in my argument. I feel really good about myself after finishing that. It makes me feel that I could be an excellent academic, given the chance!

On Friday night, most of the conference went to Cosmos, a Greek restaurant downtown. It was tasty. There were two tables, the big one with a lot of students, and all the profs on it, and then there was the "kids' table" with 9 students on it. That's where I sat! It was awesome...we had way more fun than the big table, and it was nice to talk to a small group of people for the night. After Cosmos, a handfull of us went to the Sugarbowl near campus, talked, and had (yet) more drinks! It was a lot of fun. Ben and I left at that point, but apparently they continued to a grad student's apartment and drank there... There were a few very rough people the next day!

Now back to 'normal' school!
